EPPS

English Project for Preschool In 2004, the Bruneian Ministry of Education and CfBT worked together to develop the EPPS programme as a way of giving children a real advantage in English language from their first year at school. From the 15 trial schools involved in 2005, the project has now spread to every government school in Brunei.

The project has two main aims:

1. To develop the English language skills of preschool children

2. To develop the English language teaching skills of local lower primary teachers.

Libby O'Connor is S. R. Dato Marsal's CfBT teacher in 2009. She started at S.R.Dato Marsal in January 2009 after eleven years teaching in Brunei schools, including S.R. Lumapas, S.R. Sinaut, S.R. Bukit Beruang, S.R. Tungku and S.R. Rimba 2.

In EPPS, local teachers work in team teaching situations with CfBT teachers. The transfer of skills is an important aspect of the project, and this transfer is by no means a one-way process. Mas Nurul Faaizah, the co-operating teacher for Pra C in 2009, is seen here using puppets to stimulate children's oral language skills.

After a year or two as co-operating teachers, local colleagues become fully-fledged EPPS teachers supporting the next cohort of co-operating teachers and ensuring the project's sustainability. The syllabus is constantly being reviewed and adjusted.

Major changes have occurred in 2009 with a new syllabus under development and a targeted focus on children's listening and speaking of English in preparation for the English medium Year 1 core curriculum. In Terms 1 and 2, children concentrate on spoken English through activities such as playing games, drama and singing.

Meanwhile, class teachers give intensive focus to phonics teaching in Malay which has significant carry-over to phonics skills in English. In Term 3, students will begin to study English phonics and it is expected they will make rapid progress because of the solid grounding in Malay phonics they should have achieved by this time.

As part of their oral English programme, during English week in April, Pra children performed a re-enactment of a story they had enjoyed earlier in the year - This is My Bed, by Joy Cowley. Although their first performance in front of an audience was to act in front of the whole school, the children showed great confidence, speaking clearly and with expression.

We look forward to high achievement from 2009 Pra students who we believe will continue to do their best in their studies and make a real contribution to school life at S.R. Dato Marsal.
