WORKING VISIT MINISTER OF EDUCATION TO LAMBAK KANAN PRIMARY SCHOOL AND DATO BASIR PRIMARY SCHOOL

 

 

Lambak Kanan, 8th November 2006 - Minister of Education, the Honourable Pehin Dato Awang Haji Abdul Rahman visited Lambak Kanan Primary School and Dato Basir Primary School as part of an ongoing inspection of the infrastructure and teaching quality at schools and colleges in the country.


At Lambak Kanan Primary School, the minister was briefed by headmaster Cikgu Hajah Jeriah bte Hj Duraman, during which a few matters were raised, including the school's background, academic programmes, students' achievements in public examinations, and issues and challenges faced by the school amid its growing population.


Accompanying the minister during his visit were deputy minister, deputy permanent secretaries, directors and senior officials of the Ministry of Education.


A discussion was also held, where the minister reminded the school of the importance of adequate infrastructure and better quality of teaching.

 

 

He also called for cleanliness at school toilets and compounds as well as the safety of the children.


Later, the minister planted a tree to commemorate his visit to the school.


Meanwhile, on arrival at Dato Basir Primary School, the minister and his entourage were greeted by headmaster Hjh Dyg Sarimah bte Hj Awg Bakir, who later briefed the visitors on the history of the school and its facilities as well as programmes and activities aimed at assisting the students achieve their academic goals.

 BRUNEI DARUSSALAM PARTICIPATION ON THE 3RD WORLD ROBOT OLYMPIAD 2006


Background:

Brunei Darussalam has been participating in the World Robot Olympiad (WRO) since 2004. In the 1st WRO 2004 in Singapore, Brunei was represented by a team from Sekolah Rendah Haji Mohd. Jaafar Maun, Kiulap, and followed up by a team from Sekolah Rendah Anggerek Desa in the 2nd WRO which was held last year in Thailand. This year, the 3rd WRO will take place in Nanning, Guangxi in China from 16 to 18 November 2006. A total of 195 teams from 17 countries will be participating in this year event.


Brunei Darussalam will be represented by two teams from Sekolah Rendah Lumapas, Brunei IV and Sekolah Menengah Pengiran Anak Puteri Hajah Masna. Both teams were the champions in the ‘The Brunei Robotics Olympiad (BRO) 2006’, a national level competition organized by STEP Centre on the 18 September this year. In the 3rd WRO, the Primary team will participate in the ‘Robot Soccer Goal’ category and the Secondary team will compete in the ‘Robot Adventure’ category.


WRO is an event that brings together students from around the world to interact and engage in a friendly robot competition. The process and experience inculcate creative thinking and problem-solving skills. Through the event, participants are enriched by not only technical skills but also the soft skills while at the same time learning about different cultures through social activities.


Types of Contest:


  1. Robot Soccer Goal (Primary School)
    Participants are required to design an autonomous robot from the Lego sets. The designed robot will start from the red start position, and within 90 second time limit, the robot can follow any of the three track lines to the green shooting line, then shoot the ball one at a time to the goal side.

  2. Robot Adventure (Secondary School)
    Participants are required to design an autonomous robot from the Lego sets. From the starting position, the robot should follow designated track and cross all the obstacles, and finish the mission by popping a balloon.
